Why singing is good for you and your marketing ideas
A year ago I joined a learn-to-sing course run by my local choir. An audition followed and I’m now a full member.
From the very beginning our musical director stressed how important it is to hit the notes together, not just because it sounds better but it feels better; I can’t explain the feeling you get when you’re in the middle of a bunch of guys who have all hit the right note at exactly the right moment – it’s incredible!
This is me singing with the Bournemouth Male Voice Choir:
I was curious as to why it felt so good and I happened upon an article, ‘The Neuroscience of Singing’ by Cassandra Sheppard. The article says:
“Singing in a group triggers the communal release of serotonin and oxytocin, the bonding hormone, and even synchronises our heart beats.”
So how does this translate to marketing ideas?
The article further explains that when you sing, you are connected to the right side of your brain i.e. the creative side and, importantly, singing makes you happy.
So the clear conclusion here for being more productive in your ideas meetings is to make sure you and your colleagues have a sing song beforehand.
Just a slight word of caution; the left side of your brain is the area that gets things done, so make sure somebody in the meeting engages that side – otherwise you could be there all day!
